A Legacy of Service and Vision in Prees

John Allen's journey as the Vicar of Prees from 1846 until his passing left an indelible mark on this North Shropshire village and its community. His story begins with a pivotal moment in 1843 when John Lonsdale became Bishop of Lichfield, leading to Allen's appointment in Prees three years later. Leaving behind London's bustle, Allen embraced the tranquillity of Prees It was here that Allen, alongside his family, contributed profoundly to the village's spiritual life and welfare without experiencing the sorrow of death in his household.

Allen's tenure, noted for its deep connection to the community and the church, lasted until at least 1867. His relationship with Bishop Lonsdale, characterized by mutual respect and affection, underscored his role in the village, blending his clerical duties with a visionary approach to social justice, education, and ecclesiastical independence.

A Man of Principle and Vision

Born into a family renowned for its service and intellectualism, Allen's life was a testament to the transformative power of education and the church's role in community welfare. His efforts in Prees were marked by significant educational reforms and a holistic ministry approach, aiming to nurture minds and souls alike.

John Allen held nuanced and forward-thinking views on church matters, reflecting a deep commitment to both the spiritual welfare of his parishioners and the practical aspects of church governance. Here are some key points:

Ecclesiastical Independence and Principles: Allen emphasized the importance of ecclesiastical laws being equally binding on both bishops and priests, advocating for independence from any undue pledge to specific lines of action that might compromise ecclesiastical principles. He believed in the liberty afforded by the Church to conduct his mission in his own way, highlighting a balance between adherence to church laws and the autonomy in pastoral care.

Role of the Church and Clergy: He saw the Church as a vital institution for social and spiritual welfare, not just a place for worship but as a community deeply involved in the lives of its members. Allen stressed the role of the clergy in leading by example, ensuring the spiritual and material well-being of their congregations. His work extended beyond traditional pastoral duties to addressing societal issues, such as the need for education and the alleviation of poverty.

Views on Church Governance and Liturgy: Allen’s approach to church governance was marked by a desire for a more inclusive and consultative process, valuing the input of both clergy and laity. He had specific ideas about liturgical practices, advocating for simplicity and accessibility to make the church more welcoming and relevant to all parishioners. This included addressing the issue of pew rentals, which he saw as a barrier to inclusivity within the church.

Education and Moral Responsibility: He placed a high value on education, both secular and religious, as a means of improving society and fostering a deeper understanding of Christian principles. Allen believed in the moral responsibility of individuals to contribute positively to their communities, emphasizing the importance of living according to Christian values in both personal and public life.

Social Justice and the Church’s Role: Allen was ahead of his time in recognizing the church’s role in addressing social injustices and providing for the needs of the less fortunate. He advocated for the church’s active involvement in social issues, emphasizing the importance of Christian charity and the moral imperative to support those in need.

John Allen's views on church matters, therefore, blend a deep respect for traditional ecclesiastical structures with a progressive vision for the Church's role in society, emphasizing inclusivity, moral leadership, and social responsibility.

The Legacy in Prees: St. Chad's Church and The Vicarage

Prees, with its historical richness and quaint charm, served as the perfect backdrop for Allen's transformative work. His tenure saw advancements in schooling and a more inclusive church community, notably through his service at St. Chad's Church.

The vicarage in Prees tells a story of transformation itself. Initially almost uninhabitable, it required the appointment of a locum tenens for a year while a new house was constructed. This new vicarage, designed to capture stunning views of the Welsh mountains, reflected Allen's appreciation for beauty and his commitment to creating a welcoming space for his family and his community.

Final Resting Place

John Allen's final resting place is at the southeastern corner of Lichfield cathedral, near that of Bishop Selwyn, surrounded by the love and remembrance of those he served throughout his life, including the poor who sent many wreaths in his memory.

Allen's memorial inscription, translated from Latin, not only commemorates his roles within the Church and education but also highlights his profound piety, simplicity of character, and the deep affection felt for him by all, especially by his bishop, John Lonsdale. This inscription serves as a testament to a life lived with a clear vision of God, a staunch defender of righteousness, and a devoted servant to others over self.
